NOTIONES: Summary of the project´s first Conference
On June 15th 2022 the NOTIONES consortium, along with invited external experts, organised its 1st conference, which took place in Brussels. The goal of the conference, which was titled “1st Conference on emerging technologies for law enforcement and intelligence services” was to deepen the understanding of existing and emerging technologies in the fields of intelligence and law enforcement.
In the NOTIONES project, a total of five thematic conferences will be organised, to expand the NOTIONES network to a wide number of other practitioners and representatives of industry and academy. The objectives of the conferences are the dissemination of the results and findings of NOTIONES and the enhancement of interaction with external stakeholders.
On June 15th, 2022 the NOTIONES consortium, along with invited external experts, organised its 1st conference, which took place in Brussels. The goal of the conference, which was titled “1st Conference on emerging technologies for law enforcement and intelligence services” was to deepen the understanding of existing and emerging technologies in the fields of intelligence and law enforcement.
To achieve this, the project consortium invited practitioners, policy-makers, academia, and industry in the fields of intelligence and security to join the project´s conference.
After a brief welcome and introduction to the project, the conference was kicked off by a keynote presentation, by the authors of the book “Emerging Technologies for Law Enforcement and Intelligent Services and Associated Social Implications”, namely G.Markarian, R.Karlovic, H.Nitsch and K.Chandramouli.
This was followed by a presentation on the state-of-the-art Artificial Intelligence algorithms and tools at the service of Intelligence and Security practitioners, such as illegal trafficking detection, crime prevention, and digital forensics automation.
After a brief lunch break, the participants were divided into five parallel sessions, focusing on:
- the state-of-the-art and future developments in OSINT and web analysis;
- Big Data Analysis;
- the future of HUMINT in the digital age;
- activities performed by practitioners within the Intelligence cycle;
- Ethics constraints and considerations within the intelligence and security activities.
Finally, all participants jointly discussed the challenges of monitoring and collecting data from the darknet as well as technological needs, solutions, and improvements to the analysis phase of the intelligence cycle. The event ended with a summary of the main findings, which will be further developed by NOTIONES in the coming months.
