NOTIONES
NOTIONES: Conferences on AI, data protection and cryptocurrencies promote an EU intelligence network
To establish an interacting network of intelligence and security practitioners with industry and academia actors, the NOTIONES project consortium organizes a series of knowledge exchange and networking conferences. Following its annual rhythm, the 2nd and 3rd NOTIONES conferences took place in May 2023 and May 2024 and successfully engaged a diverse set of security and intelligence stakeholders.
Over the course of the NOTIONES project, a total of five conferences are organised by the project consortium. The events aim to create a growing network of professionals committed to discussing and tackling long-standing intelligence challenges, alongside related technological advancements and needs. Additionally, these conferences foster dialogue and exchange among practitioners, policymakers, academia, and industry in the fields of intelligence and security, while also sharing updates on the latest findings and results from the NOTIONES project.
Building a robust network of practitioners and academia through event organisation and exchange
Since the first NOTIONES conference on emerging technologies for law enforcement and intelligence services, was carried out in June 2022 (see here), another two conferences were successfully implemented on an annual basis.
The second NOTIONES conference took place in May 2023 in Paris and aimed to enhance the understanding of generative artificial intelligence, its challenges and opportunities. Titled “2nd NOTIONES Conference – Generative AI and other related Challenges for LEAs”, the addressed topics of the event included disinformation, cryptocurrency challenges, and the potential application of technological tools.
Engaging the project consortium as well as external experts, the programme featured keynote speeches on AI in the security ecosystem, terrorist use of emerging technologies as well as challenges, solutions, and perspectives for the detection of disinformation by using AI tools. This included a presentation on the pivotal role of AI in addressing the complexities of today’s security environment, especially with regard to mitigating state-sponsored and hybrid threats. It emphasized the challenge of distinguishing between genuine and fabricated threatening contents due to the deceptive potential of generative AI, while also highlighting – despite its vulnerabilities – the promise AI-based systems hold for enhancing security by adapting to evolving threats in real-time.
Furthermore, the event featured presentations on the NOTIONES project and updates on other EU initiatives, giving insights into cybercrime and cyberterrorist challenges related to cryptocurrencies and technical solutions for fighting disinformation. Conference participants included policymakers, researchers, practitioners, and industry experts, who were actively engaged in open discussions.
The third NOTIONES conference, organised in Barcelona in May 2024, aimed to explore privacy considerations in the intelligence and security domain, focusing on the intersection of artificial intelligence and the protection of sensitive information. Under the title “3rd NOTIONES Conference – Securing the Future: Data Privacy, AI, and the Evolution of Intelligence” the event tackled challenges related to artificial intelligence and data privacy, along with discussions about relevant technological tools.
Accordingly, the conference programme featured keynote speeches and engaging panel discussions on the topics of AI by EUROPOL, challenges and opportunities of AI and machine learning as well as on navigating data privacy concerns in the fields of intelligence and security.
SYNYO, as leader of the overall dissemination and communication activities in NOTIONES, utilised its wide network of researchers and security practitioners, to promote the conferences and ensured active participation. This also further enhances the synergies of NOTIONES with other related projects, in which SYNYO is involved, like UNCOVER or ALLIES.
