Search & Rescue: Prototype uniform design for first respondents and first aid device for kids
Emergency first responders encounter dangerous environments when responding to calls. Against this background, the project seeks to develop a prototype of a uniform, which provides first responders with better protection and the capability of monitoring their health status. Moreover, the project aims to create a prototype of an innovative child rescue system for injured babies and kids, which can carry and protect them and monitor their life functions. At last, a portable health condition monitoring devices for adults victims will be developed for transmitting their health condition to the Emergency Management System.
The system was composed of the protective uniform for the First Responders with several embedded monitoring sensors connected to a dedicated smartphone, a first-aid device for kids to carry kids in safety away from the disaster scenario with sensors to monitor young victim health parameters and a health condition monitoring device for adult victims. All the sensors and the hand-free monitoring devices communicated with a dedicated smartphone through Bluetooth while the smartphone communicated with the Web Server through 4G/5G and WIFI technologies if available.
First responder uniform
The Search & Rescue project sought to design and develop an innovative performant uniform for first responders (FR). The uniform purpose was to protect the FR from the many dangers they encounter in their daily activities even in extreme conditions. At the same time, the uniform had to monitor the health status of first responders and the environmental conditions of the scenario. The uniform needed to be protective as well as comfortable, and it had to be compatible and combinable with all the different DPI that the FR has to wear.
First aid device for kids
The second aim of the task was to design and develop an innovative protective first-aid device for kids, which enables to carry the young victim safely out of the disaster scenario and monitor his health parameters. The device also helped first responders to easily provide first aid support to injured children. The device had to be compatible with all the different paramedical devices (such as stretchers and spinal boards) to immobilize the young victim, if necessary, before arriving at the hospital.
Health condition monitor for victims
The Emergency Response health condition Monitoring device or ERM was a compact patient monitor that could display and transmit the health condition and position of the person wearing it through a smartphone. The device would be easy to handle and fast to apply without many cables interfering with the wearer’s motion with the purpose to be used on the field and tracking the condition of the victims.
